The Breaking Ice

En av de beste filmene i årets Un Certain Regard-seksjon i Cannes var utvilsomt singaporske Anthony Chens indiedrama The Breaking Ice. Filmen er satt til byen Yanji, øst i Kina, på grensen til Nord-Korea, og forteller historien om tre helt vanlige, unge mennesker. Haofeng er opprinnelig en rikmannssønn fra Shanghai som ankommer byen desillusjonert, men i møte med nesten like rotløse Nana og Xiao klarer han sakte, men sikkert å finne en mening med tilværelsen.

Dette er en sjelden fortelling i kinesisk film, og tankene går til både Joachim Triers Reprise og François Truffauts Jules et Jim, når Haofeng, Nana og Xiao danser, drikker og diskuterer seg gjennom livets små og store utfordringer. Den mektige naturen i området fungerer nærmest som en karakter i seg selv, og klarer etter hvert på subtilt vis å trenge inn i livene til de tre hovedpersonene.

Anthony Chen (f. 1984) er en regissør og manusforfatter fra Singapore. Han har laget fem filmer, i tillegg til syv kortfilmer siden debuten i 2005. I 2013 mottok han debutregissør-prisen, Golden Camera, for sin langfilmdebut Ilo Ilo, under filmfestivalen i Cannes.

One of the highlights in this year’s Un Certain Regard section at Cannes film festival was undoubtedly Singaporean Anthony Chen’s indie drama The Breaking Ice. Set in the city of Yanji, in eastern China, near the border to North Korea, it tells the story of three quite ordinary young people. Haofeng is originally a rich man’s son from Shanghai who arrives in Yanji disillusioned, but when he gets to know the almost equally rootless Nana and Xiao, he slowly but surely manages to find the meaning in life.

This is a type of narrative seldom seen in Chinese cinema, and both Joachim Trier’s Reprise and François Truffaut’s Jules et Jim come to mind when Haofeng, Nana and Xiao dance, drink, and discuss their way through life’s small and large challenges. The powerful nature surrounding of the city acts as a character in itself, and eventually penetrates intro the lives of the three main characters.

Anthony Chen (b. 1984) is a director and writer from Singapore. He’s made five feature films, in addition to seven short films since his debut in 2005. In 2013 he received the Golden Camera Award for best first-time director at the film festival in Cannes.
