Ordet
Carl Th.
Dreyer’s film was inspired by a play written in the 30’s (when Munch was still alive too). The story of the man with the three sons, the oldest without religious faith, the middle one that went insane after studying Sören Kierkegaard and believes he is Jesus, the youngest being love sick, is not what attracted me to this film in the first place. It was rather seeing the film still in which the woman is raised from the dead in the arms of the man, and the expression on her face, that inspired me to make my painting Io. Dreyer is said to shape light like a sculptor or a painter.
In the end I related associations with moonlight in my painting. Io is half in ecstasy but also not quite from here. What you see is largely due to what you believe.
Normally, you would not be interested in a film about Christianity and matters of religious faith, but Dreyer’s direction is so exact and piercing that you are quickly swept up into the story, which begins to remind you of a piece of music, as if the film were a visual translation of a two-part invention by Bach. Paul Auster i romanen «Invisible»
The first two hours of the film consist mainly of Danish farmers and craftspeople arguing about Christian theology in veritable slow motion, the final six minutes, unless you’re an alien replicant, will have you on your knees, eyes lifted in wonder to the screen. James Schamus
