Blood and Wine
Jack Nicholson og Michael Caine i en heftig neo noir om desperate menn som tar dårlige valg.
Regissøren Bob Rafelson er mest kjent for 1970-klassikeren Five Easy Pieces, hvor vi møter Jack Nicholson i en av hans beste roller. Det gnistrende samarbeidet ble videreført i The King of Marvin Gardens (1972) og The Postman Always Rings Twice (1981), og ikke minst i denne underkjente filmen fra 1996, hvor Nicholson møter den britiske kulthelten Michael Caine i en mørk thriller med et plot som er både uforutsigbart og saftig. Nicholson spiller Alex Gates, en tvilsom vinhandler i Florida som behandler familien sin dårlig og har seg på si med en yngre cubansk kvinne (Jennifer Lopez). Gjennom henne får han idéen om å rappe et diamantsmykke fra arbeidsgiveren hennes. Han får med seg kompisen Victor (Caine), som «dripping with cheap hair dye and coughing up blood, is even more toxic than Nicholson.» (SF Chronicle).
This is one of Nicholson’s best performances, because he stays willingly inside the gritty, tired, hard-nosed personality of Alex Gates, who is failing at love, business and crime. Michael Caine, who can sleepwalk through bad movies, can bring good ones a special texture. Here he is convincing and sardonically amusing as a wreck of a man who chain-smokes, coughs, spits up blood and still goes through the rituals of a jewel thief because that is who he is. Roger Ebert
